ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in Memory of Buddy Baker

In May I was accepted to an orchestral film scoring workshop held at NYU. For ten days I worked alongside 16 of the best young composers in the world. There were participants from Korea, Spain, Canada and all over the US.

The first day we were given four film clips to consider. We each chose one of the 2-1/2 minute clips and composed our music. At the end of the workshop each of us conducted our score with a 23-piece orchestra.

I chose a difficult scene from the film, Helter Skelter, that was remade for television in 2004. It shows Charles Manson and his brood breaking into a house and doing their creepy crawl.

What makes the scene difficult is that it looks like they're doing a bunch of fraternity pranks. In reality, they are practicing being quiet before they brutally murder their victims several days later. It was important to underscore that these people are NOT funny. They're psychotic.
